Game of Influence

Several days ago I received a request to teach a workshop in Mumbles while I'm in Wales next month. While planning the logistics, my painting of Mumbles Pier Lifeboat Station came to mind.  It was Week Three of my self-proclaimed Year of Influence and the artist I chose to be my influence was Hundertwasser.

The purpose of my Game of Influence is to create a fun way to alter my way of seeing the world and to spend an entire week  viewing my world through the eyes of the other artist.  Each day of the week, I expressed my altered vision using that artist's style and technique.

The Game of Influence is not about copying another artist's work.  It is about seeing your world as that artist might see it and to create a unique sketch or painting as if you are that artist.

I recommend this practice for both beginning and advanced artists.  For a beginner, it's a great way to discover a variety of techniques that feel in line with your way of working with art tools. It also encourages you to observe the work of others more closely and to ask the question "How did the artist do that?" For more advanced artists, it's a great way to wake up the brain to new approaches and uses of materials.

Here's a link to the page on my other website, ChrisCarterArt.com, that documents the week I spent influenced by the artist Hundertwasser.

Week Three: January 15-21, 2018 - Hundertwasser
